Family Medicine Resident Wellness

Mental health in residency has become a hot topic in recent years, and Womack Army Medical Center Family Residency has been leading the way. A happy, healthy doctor learns more efficiently, provides more empathy to patients, makes better clinical judgments, and reliably shares responsibilities as part of our team. Quality family medicine physicians must know when to refer a patient to specialists; ailing providers must know when to seek help optimizing their well-being.

It Starts With Orientation

You will receive an introductory wellness session to teach you tools for managing stress, preventing burnout, and developing healthy coping strategies.

It Continues Throughout Residency

Wellness didactics and self-awareness activities empower healthy coping with some the physical, emotion, mental, and spiritual demands of residency. Dedicated faculty foster mindfulness, peer support, and stress-reduction tactics.

Team-Building

Together we sink or swim, so for the spirit of camaraderie the residency program provides and annual retreat and each year group has a retreat of their own.

Wellness Resident

A fun-loving resident will have the opportunity to lead recreational efforts especially to ward off the holiday blues when schedule may not permit travel back home.

Concerned Staff

Staff regularly meet to hear the frustrations and challenges—as well as the rewards and successes—of the residents and actively work to improve the program. An ombudsman stands by ready to advocate for residents. Each resident is assigned a mentor to help understand responsibilities of the program, and help with stress. Additionally, all staff keep an “open-door” policy.

Duty Hours

Our faculty actively foster a culture of adherence to duty hours. Residency is stressful enough without the risk of running over duty hours.

Clinical Support

Should a resident feel overwhelmed and desire professional help, seeking aide is encouraged here and comprehensive and confidential professional help is readily available.

Army Force Multiplier

In addition to clinical staff at Womack, Ft. Bragg has the Soldier Support Center, the Army Wellness Center, and several Army-wide hotlines to optimize function in everything from diet and exercise to time management to recognizing and replacing unhealthy thought patterns.
