Adult Outpatient/Behavioral Health Officer (BHO) Rotation:

Our Train-as-You-Fight’ model allows interns to gradually develop and balance all of the skills of professional psychologists during this extended nine-month rotation. This rotation is set in an outpatient multidisciplinary clinic that provides treatment to active component service members and includes psychiatry, case management, and specialty care services. Interns learn how to gradually integrate and balance all of their clinical skills, as they simultaneously conduct behavioral health evaluations, provide psychological testing for inpatient and outpatient beneficiaries, maintain a small caseload of group and individual psychotherapy patients, learn to assess and manage risk, and conduct military-specific evaluations to include command directed, schools (drill sergeant, recruiter, and sniper), and administrative separations – all while healthily attending to their own self-care.

Interns will learn and develop communication and consultation skills to enhance interactions with military leaders. We train on empirically validated treatment methods from a variety of behavioral, cognitive, and information-processing approaches including Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for insomnia, pain and depression. Graduates of this rotation consistently provided feedback that they left this rotation confident in their readiness to practice independently as generalists and as a BHO.

Operational Rotation (Elective)

Interns spend three months at the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School where they are introduced to military Special Operations. Interns are provided opportunities to observe and practice the fundamentals of occupational assessment and selection, leadership development and coaching, and performance enhancement skills. This rotation includes an introduction to the literature and instruments involved in assessment and selection, instruction and training in persuasion and influence, and observation of how these skills are utilized to support military Special Operations.

TBI Clinic Rotation (Elective)

Interns spend three months at the National Intrepid Spirit at Fort Bragg where they are introduced to neuropsychological principles, develop an understanding of the foundations of traumatic brain injury evaluation, and receive exposure to individual and group treatment of post-concussive symptoms. Under the supervision of licensed neuropsychologists, interns also learn the fundamentals of cognitive assessment of other common syndromes such as early dementia and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Interns leave this rotation with a rudimentary foundation of neuropsychological report writing.

Primary Care Rotation (Elective)

On this three-month rotation, interns work directly in a health psychology setting with psychologists serving as Internal Behavioral Health Consultants in a patient-centered medical clinic. Interns learn how to complete rapid evaluations of patients presenting with a variety of symptoms and concerns including but not limited to anxiety, insomnia, weight reduction, medical treatment adherence, lifestyle management, tobacco cessation, and diabetes management.
