Transitional Year Residency
Program Overview
A Transitional Year Residency provides a broad-based program of graduate medical education in multiple clinical disciplines designed to facilitate the choice of and preparation for a specific specialty, including specialties: A branch of medicine or surgery that a doctor specializes in. requiring a year of fundamental clinical education as a prerequisite. Transitional Year (TY) Programs also provide clinical education for those medical school graduates planning to serve in public health organizations or in the military as general medical officers, or those who desire or need to acquire at least one year of fundamental clinical education before entering administrative medicine or research.
This internship is for those who:
- Desire a broad based internship experience
- Plan an operational assignment after PGY
- Desire future training in competitive residency
- Are undecided in their future career path

Eligibility Criteria
The Womack Transitional Year Program and director comply with the criteria for resident eligibility as specified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Womack Graduate Medical Education Institutional Resident Guidelines and Army standards. All residents are members of the Army. There are no civilian trainees.
Number of Residents
The Womack Transitional Year Program is approved to accept up to six residents each year.
Resident Transfers
The Womack Transitional Year Program does not accept resident transfers from other programs once the academic year begins.
Transitional Year Resident Wellness
The Womack Transitional Year Program and institution educates residents and faculty members on the professional responsibilities of physicians to appear for duty appropriately rested and fit to provide services required by their patients. The program is committed to promoting patient safety and resident well-being in a supportive educational environment.
