Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program

Prospective Residents

Accepting applications in 2020

Womack Army Medical Center's Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Training Program offers four years of intensive study and hands on experience. Entry for this program is at the internship level PGY1 or PGY2  (postgraduate year) only after the completion of a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited orthopaedic surgery internship.

Residency is an essential dimension of the transformation of the medical student to the independent practitioner along the continuum of medical education. It is physically, emotionally, and intellectually demanding, and requires longitudinally-concentrated effort on the part of the resident.

Our goal is to help you develop into a successful orthopaedic surgeon whom independently provides outstanding care to their patients which requires maximum effort from each of us. A physician’s diligent pursuit of knowledge and apprenticed development of clinical skills in an environment of inquiry and scholarship are the keys to an orthopaedic education. Disciplined daily study; attention to clinical detail, team player attitude and compassionate patient directed care are characteristics that will serve you for the remainder of your career.

Eligibility Criteria

The Womack Orthopaedic Surgery Program and director comply with the criteria for resident eligibility as specified in the Womack Graduate Medical Education Institutional Resident Guidelines and U.S. Army standards. All residents are members of the United States Army and must be US citizens.

*WE DO NOT ACCEPT CIVILIAN RESIDENTS*

Number of Residents

The WAMC Orthopedic Surgery program is approved to accept up to four residents each year. The program’s educational resources are adequate to support this number of residents each year.

Resident Transfers

The Womack Orthopaedic Surgery program does not accept resident transfers from other programs once the academic year begins.

Appointment of Fellows and Other Learners

The presence of other learners in the program (i.e. categorical trainees from specialty and fundamental clinical skills rotations) do not interfere with the education of residents.

Resident Selection and Application

Selection to the Orthopaedic Surgery Program

The MODS system is used for selection of residents into the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency program. Results from this military match are distributed at the Army Graduate Medical Education Selection Board which is typically held the week after Thanksgiving each year. In early November, the Orthopaedic Surgery program will review the applicants through the MODS files and place them in order of the merit list based on their performance, USMLE scores, letter of recommendations, leadership potential, and interest in Military Service.

All applicants are required to apply through the Medical Education FYGME Branch, Falls Church VA, in addition to applying to the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS), developed by the Association of American Medical College (AAMC). For detailed information on applying for FYGME, contact the Medical Education Office, FYGME Branch, Falls Church. The application deadline for residency is September 14 at 9:00 p.m.

We welcome anyone that is interested in training to contact us to set up a rotation or an interview.
