U.S. Army Graduate Program in Anesthesia

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

• Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and an overall science GPA of 3.0

• Undergraduate class in either Biochemistry or Organic chemistry. Graduate courses accepted.

• All active duty and reserve applicants must have at least one year of Critical Care Nursing which is defined by the Council on Accreditation:

"Critical care experience must be obtained in a critical care area within the United States, its territories, or a US military hospital outside of the United States. During this experience, the registered professional nurse is to have developed critical decision-making and psychomotor skills, competency in patient assessment, and the ability to use and interpret advanced monitoring techniques. A critical care area is defined as one where, on a routine basis, the registered professional nurse manages one or more of the following: invasive hemodynamic monitors (such as pulmonary artery catheter, CVP, arterial); cardiac assist devices; mechanical ventilation; and vasoactive infusions. Examples of critical care areas may include but are not limited to: Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Cardiac Care Unit (CCU), Medical Intensive care Unit (MICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Those who have experience in other areas may be considered provided they can demonstrate competence with managing unstable patients, invasive monitoring, ventilators, and critical care pharmacology."

Active Duty Applicants

Two years “time on station” (TOS) by date that PCS is required. If the soldier is overseas, they must complete their overseas tour prior to school

Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) within five years

Target scores for each section; Quantitative 500 (old scoring) or 144 (new scoring), Verbal 500 (old scoring) or 153 (new scoring), plus score 3.5 or higher on writing component. Any combination resulting in a score of 297 is acceptable.

• All Army applicants must have a Phase 2 interview. 

This three-year course of graduate education includes one year of didactic preparation prior to a two-year clinical residency at a selected Army medical center.

II. CHAIN OF COMMAND (Academic)

On out-rotations from Womack, USAGPAN students spend 4 weeks at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO where they acquire anesthesia experience in one of the most notable Neurosurgical centers in the world. Experience in cardiothoracic anesthesia is obtained during a rotation at Elvis Pressley Trauma Center/ Regional One Medical Center, in Memphis, TN. Finally, to hone their clinical expertise, students spend up to 8 weeks in the fast paced environment of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington NC, pursuing higher acuity and emergent cases.
